Sydney, NSW (PRWEB) September 11, 2007 -- Thomson Education Direct, Australia's leading provider of distance learning education, in conjunction with the Language Training Institute, today announced they had launched an innovative teaching English course designed for people wishing to work overseas.
The comprehensive teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) course (http://www.thomsoneducationdirect.com.au/index.cfm?id=700), which is an important preparatory step towards gaining Certificate IV accreditation, enables students to learn the theory of teaching English to speakers of other languages and to use the qualification overseas or within Australia.
Unveiling the new program, Thomson Education Direct's General Manager, Malcolm Kinns, said the TESOL course had been designed to be completed by correspondence in 12 months or earlier and involves around 120 hours of study.
"This is a very innovative course and can be very useful for people seeking to work overseas," Mr Kinns said. "It is an important certification to have because many businesses will ask if an individual has a TESOL qualification, which enables them to teach English overseas."
Mr Kinns said the course structure catered for both experienced learners and those people returning to study to gain additional qualifications.
"The resources have been developed to provide a highly structured and supportive learning experience. A key advantage of the course is that students can do all the theory by correspondence so that they can then take the Certificate IV in TESOL in conjunction with practical teaching experience."
The TESOL course (http://www.thomsoneducationdirect.com.au/index.cfm?id=700) includes a study guide, a 200-page TESOL text book entitled TESOL Made Practical, and an easy to follow workbook which together to make a complete package.
Subjects include assessing English-speaking learners (http://www.thomsoneducationdirect.com.au/index.cfm?id=703), to find out the capabilities of the people who will be taught English; exploring the purposes and methods of assessment; designing valid and reliable assessment items; and evaluating standardised assessments. Students will also learn classroom logistics and management techniques, and to develop their own resource files around grammar, topics, levels and communicating functions.
Students need to complete 47 assignments as part of the program.
"We receive a significant number of enquiries every month about whether we provide this course, which has been an important part of our decision to make it available," Mr Kinns said.
"Feedback from students is that the course is a wonderful experience that provides the teaching tools for them to put into practice. We've never had a graduate come back saying they couldn't find a teaching position overseas. This is the best Australian produced TESOL learning program," said Paul Truasheim, Chief Executive Officer of the Language Training Institute.
